Generic Bontril – An Overview

Bontril® (phendimetrazine tartrate) is a medication for weight loss available only on prescription and works by suppressing appetite. Chemically, Bontril is related to amphetamines. The use of this medication has been approved only for short terms and should be limited to a few weeks of use.

Currently, Bontril is manufactured by Valeant Pharmaceuticals. But, the patent for the same has expired and presently generic Bontril is also available.

Generic Bontril – Strengths

Generic Bontril PDM tablets are available in a single strength of phendimetrazine 35 mg tablets. Presently, there are no other medicines that equal Bontril SR capsules, even though some generic slow release phendimetrazine capsules are available that have similar active ingredients in similar quantities. In case of slow-release products, a number of exceptional tests need to be performed if the specific product is to be considered equal. Not one of the available generic slow-release phendimetrazine products has cleared these tests.

Generic Bontril – Who makes it?

Various companies such as Truxton Company, Inc. and Sandoz manufacture generic versions of Bontril PDM.

Generic Phendimetrazine – Is it as good as Bontril?

Every one of generic medications has to go through specific tests to evaluate them to the brand-name medications. Then the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) evaluates the results of these tests to settle if the generic versions equals the brand-name medications, and after assessment assigns a rating. If the FDA determines that the generic medication equals to a brand-name medication it assigns the rating of “AA”. Presently, generic phendimetrazine tablets are assigned an “AA” rating, which means they are an equivalent to Bontril PDM tablets. The entire range of slow-release phendimetrazine capsules as well as Bontril SR are assigned “BC” ratings, which means they are not considered an equal of the brand-name medication.

You should bear in mind that generic medicines are permitted to have dissimilar inactive ingredients when compared to the branded medicines. This could comprise of dyes, fillers or any other ingredients that could result in problems for people who are prone to sensitivities or allergies.
