Adipex and Pregnancy - An Overview
Adipex-P® (phentermine) is meant for weight loss and is available only on prescription. As there have been no studies on the effects of the use of Adipex-P in any pregnant animals or women, it could be unsafe to take it during pregnancy.
Adipex and Pregnancy - Category C
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a pregnancy category system in which medicines are classified according to the likely risk it poses to a fetus when taken pregnancy. Medicines for which there are no studies in pregnant humans but seem to cause negative effects to the fetus in studies on animal is classified as Pregnancy Category C. Furthermore, Pregnancy Category C rating is automatically assigned to medications with no studies in any pregnant women or animals.
There have been no studies related to Adipex-P use in any pregnant women or animals. However, some reports indicate stillbirth and lung problems that are likely to be related to use of Adipex-P during pregnancy. Chemically, Adipex-P is related to amphetamines which are known to increase the risk of miscarriages and birth defects when used during pregnancy. As the safety of Adipex-P use during pregnancy is not known and since its use is not entirely essential, it is usually suggested that its use be avoided during pregnancy.
